The dust you raise mixing glazes and sieving dry materials carries crystalline silica, and silica is what scars potters’ lungs over a career of studio work. The right mask is the difference between a nuisance and silicosis. This post covers the three levels of respiratory protection used in ceramic glaze making, how to choose between them, and how to keep a respirator actually sealed to your face.
Why glaze dust is the real hazard
The danger is not the wet clay on the wheel. It is the dry work: weighing and mixing glaze materials, sieving, sanding bisque, sweeping. Those steps put respirable particles into the air that are too fine to see and small enough to lodge deep in your lungs. Many glaze ingredients — silica, feldspars, some frits — contain crystalline silica, which is linked to permanent, progressive lung damage. OSHA’s silica standard exists for exactly this reason. The fix is simple and cheap: wear a rated mask every time you handle dry material.
The three levels of respiratory protection

N95 disposable respirators
An N95 filters 95% of airborne particulates and is fine for short, occasional work. The tradeoffs are real: it seals poorly against facial hair, it stops no vapors, and it is disposable, so it clogs and needs replacing. If you use one, choose a strapped version for a tighter seal or one you can pull off cleanly between tasks.
Half-face respirators with P100 filters
This is the working potter’s mask, and what I reach for. The half-face respirator I use seals to the face far better than any disposable and stays comfortable through a full mixing session. Fit it with P100 cartridges and it stops 99.97% of particulates, including silica. The key word here is replaceable: you swap cartridges instead of throwing the whole mask away, so it lasts for years.
Full-face respirators
A full-face respirator adds eye protection to the same P100 filtration. It earns its bulk when you spray glazes or run long sessions moving a lot of dry material. For most bench mixing it is more than you need.
Matching the cartridge to the job
Particulate cartridges stop dust. They do not stop fumes. As a general rule: P100 for anything dry and dusty, and organic-vapor cartridges when chemistry is in the air. If you fire lusters or work with solvents, switch to organic-vapor cartridges — lusters off-gas heavily and a particulate filter does nothing against it.
Keeping the mask sealed
A P100 cartridge is worthless if air leaks around the edge of the mask. The key word here is seal.
- Fit-check every time you put it on: cover the cartridges, inhale, and feel the mask pull in and hold. If air sneaks in, reseat the straps.
- Shave the seal area. Facial hair breaks the seal, and no strap tension fixes that.
- Store it sealed in a bag or box so it does not collect the dust you are trying to avoid.
- Replace cartridges on a schedule, and sooner if breathing gets harder or you smell anything through them.
A note on sanding
Sanding bisque is one of the dustiest jobs in the studio. Wet sand whenever you can — it traps the particles in water so there is almost nothing to breathe. Common problems
- Air leaks around the edge. The mask is the wrong size or the straps are loose. Reseat and fit-check; try a different size if it still leaks.
- You can smell material through the mask. Wrong cartridge or a spent one. Use organic-vapor cartridges for fumes; replace particulate cartridges that are clogged.
- A disposable that has gone soft or gray. It is loaded with dust and no longer filtering well. Toss it.
- Fogged lenses on a full-face. Poor exhalation valve seating or a dirty valve — clean or reseat it.
